Matrix Pro Cycling are pleased to confirm a new collaboration with Specialized which will see Welsh gold medal winning Olympian Elinor Barker ride S-Works road and time trial bikes in 2017.

  • Specialized Bikes back Elinor for road and TT
  • Cyclefit Manchester provide bike physiology and also physiotherapy
  • Elinor continues as a Matrix Fitness ambassador for 2017
  • Time Trial World Championships major season goal

Project background:

The 19th September isn’t a date which sticks in most people’s minds, but for Elinor Barker it marks the anniversary of her first World Championship medal, Silver in Copenhagen in 2011 in the Junior World Time Trial Championships. That day sparked a fire in Elinor and a passion for the Time Trial which has been on hold while she focused on her track career as part of the British Team Pursuit Team. It is therefore fitting that exactly six years after that race, 19th September 2017; she is aiming to return to the Time Trial in the elite World Championships in Bergen, Norway.

Elinor and her team, Matrix Pro Cycling, have put together a bespoke programme tailored across every aspect of her training, equipment and preparation to build on her success as part of the Great Britain team for the Rio Olympics where she won Gold in the Team Pursuit.

Central to this programme is the introduction of Specialized bikes as an official partner.

A Specialized approach:

Elinor has chosen an S-Works Shiv TT Module and Roval CLX 64 tubular wheels for Time Trials, and an S-Works Tarmac with Roval CLX32 wheels for road racing. Elinor has already had the opportunity to take the Specialized S-Works Shiv bike provided to California to focus on detailed aerodynamics. Following the Los Angeles Track World Cup in February, Elinor flew to Morgan Hill, HQ of Specialized, to complete a Body Geometry FIT and full wind tunnel testing, giving her an opportunity to refine her position on the bikes set by Cyclefit Manchester during detailed work with them during the winter.  Each bike will be equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components, Roval wheels and Specialized cockpit components.

“Elinor chose Specialized bikes and equipment as part of her 2017 program and we are very proud to partner with her and her team. Elinor has an incredible talent, an open mindedness and strong professionalism towards her preparation and development. We have a great opportunity to work effectively together towards delivering best performance and achieving her goals this season, ultimately the Individual Time Trial at the World Championships in Bergen.” William Watt, Specialized UK

Attention to Detail:

The project immediately struck a chord with the team who’ve long sought to show they can provide individual support to a rider to rival any team or federation. Leaving no stone unturned, the team have added to their long established support group with increased input from Cyclefit Manchester with long term physiotherapy support, physiology and specific attention to details with the set up and fitting of the Specialized bikes for Elinor.

“We love a project at Cyclefit, we always have. Add in a splash of adventure and audacity and we couldn’t be happier. It has been particularly interesting and to work with Elinor Barker over the 2016/17 winter, with her medium-term goal of World TT success in Norway this September. Elinor is one of the most engaged professional cyclists we have ever worked with. In that sense she embodies our own ethic that pro riders have a fundamental responsibility to ‘own their positions’. This means ranging with us far and wide – strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, podiatry. As well as continual fits and re-fits in a relentless pursuit of increased watts per kilogram. Luckily Elinor is as intellectually curious as we are and will happily devote hours in the collegiate pursuit of speed.” Phil Cavell, Director, Cyclefit

2017 Programme:

Elinor will be competing at the World Track Championships in April, followed immediately by a training camp in France at the team’s training base near Limoux. Following that Elinor will start road competition, with the British National Time Trial Championships as a focus of the first half of the season. From there the team will travel to Slovenia to support Elinor in the UCI time trial in Ljubljana, before looking to secure selection for the European and World Championships.

“I’m really excited to announce a new focus for the remainder of this year, after the upcoming Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong next month. After years of concentrating solely on the team pursuit on the track I think the time trial on the road is the perfect goal for me this year. I’ve had a huge amount of support already from Matrix and Specialized and can’t wait to properly get my teeth stuck into the challenge.” Elinor Barker, Matrix Pro Cycling
